Commissioned on October 25, 1986, the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) is named in honor of America's 26th President.
Extending 1,092 feet in total length and boasting an extreme width of 252 feet, this colossal carrier is referred to by its crew as "America's Big Stick," a reference to President Theodore Roosevelt's famously firm approach to foreign policy. Boasting a 4.5 acre flight deck, the USS Theodore Roosevelt carries a full complement of 85 fixed and rotary wing aircraft and 5,500 officers and crew. Serving as an active-duty carrier in the Navy's Nimitz class for more than fifteen years, the mighty Theodore Roosevelt led Carrier Air Wing 1 in the U.S. assault against the renegade Taliban regime in October of 2001, initiating Operation Enduring Freedom.
This coin salutes the outstanding courage and commitment of all those who proudly serve aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt. The obverse contains a bust of Theodore Roosevelt depicted above a detailed rendering of the carrier named in his honor and is engraved with his famous dictum: "Walk softly and carry a big stick." The reverse contains the official emblem of the USS Theodore Roosevelt.
Struck in deep relief using a special "splash minting" process, this coin is minted in a brass alloy and finished in antique bronze.
