The Blue Grouse is the second largest grouse in North America, exceeded in size only by the Sage Grouse.
Ranging in size from 15-21 inches, Blue Grouse typically weigh between 2-3 pounds. Usually found nestled in the dense cover of conifer and aspen trees, their habitat is typically limited to mountainous areas above 8,500 feet. During winter, Blue Grouse feed almost exclusively on conifer needles. In summer, they feed on the leaves and berries of a wide range of plants. Usually well camouflaged, the Blue Grouse is detectable by its distinctive booming hoot, which can be heard at great distances.
This coin features a detailed depiction of a Blue Grouse on its obverse. Bordered by a classic wreath design, the reverse contains a space for engraving.
